Levan Makhashvili, the Chair of the Georgian Parliament’s Committee on European Integration, on Monday commented on President Mikheil Kavelashvili’s open letter to US President Donald Trump, emphasising the importance for Georgia to be aware of the new American president’s position in order to draw appropriate conclusions and make informed decisions.
“It is crucial for Georgia to know the stance of the new US President in a timely manner, so that the country can draw appropriate conclusions and make the right decisions”, Makhashvili said.
“The longer this uncertainty and transition period lasts, the more it benefits Georgia’s ill-wishers, who try to harm the country. That is why it is essential for everything to be clarified as soon as possible. Our primary interest, of course, is to reset bilateral relations, and we hope that the new American president will share the same outlook”, the Parliament official concluded.
In a publicly released open letter addressed to the President of the United States Donald Trump, Georgian President Mikheil Kavelashvili expressed both his respect for the American leader and concern over the current state of US-Georgia relations.
Kavelashvili reaffirmed Georgia’s commitment to strengthening its strategic partnership with the United States, describing it as a top priority of the country’s foreign policy.
He noted, however, that ties between the two nations had suffered under the previous US administration, which he accused of pursuing an “unjust, harsh and aggressive policy” toward sovereign states.
