Kakha Kaladze, the Mayor of Tbilisi and Secretary General of the ruling Georgian Dream party, has emphasised that Georgia continues to take concrete steps toward progress, implementing reforms and achieving measurable results, which place the country ahead of many EU member states and far beyond other candidate countries.
Kaladze made the remarks in response to the Positive Peace 2024 report, which ranked Georgia 38th worldwide in the Well-Functioning Government Index.
“When there is fair evaluation, everything is clear and transparent - Georgia is moving forward. But the moment political narratives from some Euro-bureaucrats come into play, we face unfair assessments. Their evaluations are often based on lies, slander, and misinformation”, the ruling party official said.
He further added that the double standards frequently applied by some European officials stem from two key reasons - Georgia’s refusal to join the war in Ukraine by opening a “second front” and its decision not to participate in Western financial sanctions, which he argued would have been “destructive and damaging” for the Georgian economy.
Kaladze underlined that preserving peace has no alternative and remains at the core of the Government’s pragmatic policy.
Responding to speculation about a possible suspension of visa-free travel with the EU, Kaladze declared that Georgia’s national interest in visa liberalisation would never be compromised.
“Attempts to punish the Georgian people continue, but the state’s interest in visa liberalization will not and cannot be exchanged. Responsibility lies with European bureaucrats who spread slanderous statements. In reality, the pressure is linked to Georgia not opening a second front and not joining sanctions that would cripple our economy. No external actor - American, European, or Russian - will do our work for us. We must safeguard our homeland and its interests ourselves”, he concluded.
