Kakha Kaladze, the Mayor of Tbilisi and Secretary General of the ruling Georgian Dream party, on Thursday criticised the MEGOBARI Act - a bipartisan US bill that envisages sanctions against the Georgian Dream Government officials - calling it a document filled with “lies and defamation”.
Kaladze’s comments came in response to questions from journalists regarding the Act's status in the US Senate.
In his remarks, Kaladze said he was unsure what the final decision regarding the Act would be but asserted that the document was “completely saturated with falsehoods, defamation, and lies”. He further claimed that it has been revealed “how all of this was recorded in the Act”.
“A total of $360,000 has been paid, and a specific congressman, the honourable Wilson, has received $87,000 for blackening Georgia's name and filling this document with false information. This is the given situation, the reality, and this is the truth that became known through the FARA law”, Kaladze said.
He further added that now it was clear for “everyone” why there was such resistance to adopting a FARA-type law in Georgia.
“This law wouldn’t even be necessary if we hadn’t seen repeated attacks and attempts to destabilise the country in recent years. But they will not succeed - together with the people, we will protect the interests of Georgia and the Georgian people”, Kaladze concluded.
