Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze on Wednesday accused European foundations of becoming the primary tool for funding revolutionary processes and radicalism in the country, negatively impacting its stability.
In his interview with Adjara TV, Kobakhidze expressed concern over the European Parliament’s resolutions, which he described as increasingly unjust and damaging to the reputation of European institutions.
“The European Parliament has adopted seven resolutions, and all seven are increasingly unjust, which has a very negative impact on the reputation of the European Parliament and European structures as a whole in society”, the PM said.
The PM highlighted a shift in foreign funding dynamics, noting that while US funding through agencies like USAID and NED had largely ceased under the new US administration, European foundations had taken their place as the main instrument for supporting revolutionary activities.
“The demands of European bureaucracy are primarily related to the non-enforcement of the rule of law in the country. This is the main theme. Additionally, they often demand the punishment of specific individuals or the release of criminals, bypassing justice. This is completely incomprehensible. The second theme that emerges in these demands is the encouragement of revolutionary processes in the country. We have observed events over the past few years. Not only American but also European foundations were directly involved in financing revolutions. Under the new administration, such funding from the US, particularly through USAID and NED, has essentially stopped. These were the two main channels. In such conditions, European foundations have become the main instrument for financing revolutionary processes and radicalism. Unfortunately, this is reflected in the European Parliament’s resolutions”, he noted.
He concluded by stressing the importance of stability and the rule of law for Georgia’s future, lamenting the bias evident in European Parliament resolutions that undermines these principles and erodes public trust in European institutions.
“We need calm and stability in our country, and we need the rule of law, which is directly linked to stability, peace, and tranquillity. When such bias is evident in the European Parliament’s resolutions and other decisions, it is very regrettable, and in such conditions, it is no surprise that, according to European studies, trust in European bureaucracy and the European Union has radically decreased in Georgia. This is because society constantly observes the process of creating new challenges for the country and the fact that European bureaucracy blatantly opposes the principle of the rule of law and the state interests related to our country’s stability”, the PM concluded.
