Levan Makhashvili, the Chair of the Committee on European Integration of the Georgian Parliament, on Tuesday said as the situation in the Ukrainian war theater had become more complicated, the pressure on the Georgian Government to create “more discomfort” for Russia had increased.
Makhashvili’s response came after the European Commission had sent a letter, outlining eight recommendations the country must fulfil to avoid jeopardizing its visa-free travel with the EU. One of the main recommendations is the repeal of the laws on transparency of foreign influence and on the protection of family values and minors.
In his remarks, Makhashvili noted that the Georgian Government was taking steps as cautiously as possible, because creating discomfort for Russia meant a collapse of Georgia.
“The more complicated the situation in the Ukrainian theater of war became, the more pressure grew on the Georgian authorities to do more to create discomfort for Russia. For some, this is discomfort for Russia, but for us it would be a direct collapse of the country. Therefore, we are considering these threats and are taking steps as carefully as possible”, Makhashvili said.
