Georgian Parliament Speaker Shalva Papuashvili on Wednesday criticised the European Parliament's latest resolution on Georgia, accusing MEPs of demanding the release of the imprisoned former President Mikheil Saakashvili, whom Papuashvili labels a “dictator” convicted lawfully by the Georgian judiciary.
In a social media message, Papuashvili reacted to the European Parliament’s call for Saakashvili’s release, framing it as a betrayal of European values.
“With today's resolution on Georgia, the European Parliament demanded the release of dictator Mikheil Saakashvili from lawful imprisonment - Saakashvili, who was exposed by the European Court of Human Rights for systemic and systematic torture of prisoners”, the Speaker said.
He concluded his statement by reiterating that “value confusion - that's all we need to know about the current state of Brussels”.
The European Parliament on Wednesday adopted the resolution on Georgia. The resolution calls for the immediate release of Mikheil Saakashvili, the holding of new parliamentary elections, and the recognition of Salome Zourabichvili's legitimacy as President.
