Eight opposition parties in Georgia have declared a boycott of the upcoming local self-government elections, a move swiftly criticised by Giorgi Volski, the First Vice Speaker of the Georgian Parliament. Volski labeled the boycott "sabotage", asserting it was a tactic long employed by the opposition United National Movement party.
In his remarks, Volski asserted that the United National Movement had not abandoned its revolutionary goals and was instead attempting to revive them with renewed energy.
“This is not a boycott - it’s sabotage, which has always been the United National Movement’s method. Since 2012, there hasn’t been a single day of substantive dialogue or debate on issues concerning the country’s development. The UNM’s revolutionary idea is not only alive, but it’s also trying to gain new momentum”, Volski said.
Lelo has officially confirmed its participation in the local elections, as has Gakharia’s party. Meanwhile, the UNM and the Ahali party remain in boycott mode.
Georgia’s local self-government elections are scheduled for October 4.
