Georgian Parliament Speaker Shalva Papuashvili on Monday expressed regret that the “special attitude” the Georgian people held towards Germany was being “diligently undermined and damaged” by a single individual, Ambassador Peter Fischer.
In his remarks, Papuashvili noted that it was a fact that Fischer didn’t not represent the German people, because the German people do not share the values that Mr. Fischer is displaying to the Georgian people.
“Mr. Fischer has ultimately rejected his role as an Ambassador and has instead become a regular supporter of the radical opposition - its most radical wing. Elene Khoshtaria is not only a radical opposition figure, but also an extremist, who is known for her lack of respect toward democratic institutions, human rights, and dignity. She shows no regard for anything that might be considered a positive trait in a politician”, the Speaker said.
He also addressed that the Ambassador tried to justify his actions by saying it was sympathy and empathy.
“Sympathy for what? For someone who says they will commit suicide if something doesn’t happen? Is this the European understanding of democracy? What exactly is he empathizing with - someone calling on the opposition to boycott the elections? Is this his idea of democracy? It is a fact that Mr. Fischer does not represent the German people”, he continued.
“The German people certainly do not share the values that Mr. Fischer is showing the Georgian public, and it is unfortunate that the special relationship Georgians have had with Germany over our 34 years of independence is being undermined and damaged so thoroughly by one person - I don’t know how long it will take to repair the harm”, Papuashvili concluded.
