Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze on Friday announced an ambitious national objective during his annual address to Parliament - to position Georgia among the top three countries in the world for low levels of corruption.
He emphasised that the political will was in place, and the rest depended on effectively implementing that will.
“We have all the conditions necessary to achieve this result in the near future. One of our main tasks remains the continued improvement of our governance system. Last year, I declared that one of our top priorities would be the maximum reduction of corruption in the country”, the PM said.
Kobakhidze highlighted that Georgia already performed well in international corruption indices, surpassing 7-8 EU member states.
However, he stressed that this should not lead to complacency, reaffirming his Government’s aim to enter the global top three for corruption control.
“There is political will, the rest depends on the implementation of this will. We have all the conditions to achieve this result in the near future. For this, the Georgian Government has taken specific steps over the past year and this year. As you know, the Government of Georgia ensures full transparency by publishing all legal acts. Everything is out in the open, accessible to the public. Critics have searched through these documents but found nothing questionable, because the government operates transparently and adheres to strict principles. This will continue going forward”, he concluded.
