Nino Tsilosani, an MP for the ruling Georgian Dream party and Vice Speaker of the Georgian Parliament, on Thursday said the Georgian Government had long become accustomed to foreign politicians making unfair statements based on certain interests, lobbying, or paid funds.
Tsilosani's comments come in response to a joint statement by the US Senate Foreign Relations Committee members, which accused the Georgian Dream government of “aggressively consolidating power through anti-democratic actions that suppress independent voices - reminiscent of the Lukashenko regime”.
“When Senators like Shaheen and her colleagues witness the arrest and brutal treatment of protesters in their own country over Donald Trump-related legislation, and yet criticise us for similar actions while talking about democratic backsliding, it’s impossible to view their statements as either objective or fair”, the Parliament official said.
She further claimed that such statements often reflect lobbying efforts, specific interests, or even financial influence.
“We’ve long become accustomed to foreign politicians making unjustified statements shaped by lobbying, political interests, or paid influence. I strongly suspect this is another such case”, Tsilosani concluded.
