Georgia’s ruling party MP highlights national resilience amid geopolitical threats

Irakli Kirtskhalia, the Deputy Chair of the ruling Georgian Dream party faction in the legislative body, on Tuesday emphasised Georgia’s national strength, sovereignty, and the vital role of the State Security Service in maintaining stability.

In his interview with Imedi TV, Kirtskhalia underlined the complexity of Georgia’s geopolitical location and the range of hybrid threats the country has faced - particularly since 2022 - with reference to the increasing role of foreign actors attempting to influence internal affairs.

“When you are geopolitically situated in such a region, with armed conflicts surrounding your neighbourhood, the threats are undoubtedly enormous. In the 21st century, the hybrid threats we have witnessed have become particularly acute since 2022. These threats stem from politicians and elected bureaucrats backed by the deep state, who continue their efforts with double strength in Europe today, even more so than during the Trump administration in the United States”, Kirtskhalia said.

The official further praised the State Security Service’s contribution, stating that while their work often went unseen by the public, their impact was immense.

“Our country faces immense challenges, and despite these challenges, in parallel with them, our state is strong, independent, and sovereign as never before in Georgia’s recent history. The State Security Service, with its history and each member of its staff, often operates in secrecy, and society learns only a fraction of the immense efforts exerted by the people working there”, the MP noted.

He stressed the importance of managing the country through pragmatic, balanced governance, particularly in foreign and security policy.

“Strengthening such agencies, standing firm, and managing the country with a clear, pragmatic mindset in both domestic and foreign policy is crucial. We pursue this peaceful policy, and our country relies on such heroic agencies. Under the conditions of the Georgian Dream, our country follows the peaceful course it has chosen”, Kirtskhalia concluded.
