Georgian Parliament Speaker Shalva Papuashvili on Tuesday sharply criticised what he described as a “series of attacks” on the Georgian state from Brussels, calling it a “regrettable trend” in recent times.
In a social media message, Papuashvili urged the European Union to return to its foundational values, such as respect for human rights and the rule of law.
“Yesterday, we witnessed a whole series of attacks from Brussels against the Georgian state, which, in recent times, has unfortunately become a trend. These attacks are especially alarming given that propaganda and disinformation, hate campaigns, political persecution, extremism, and efforts to dismantle democratic institutions are being demonstrably funded from EU and member state budgets”, the Speaker said.
He further highlighted that instead of addressing these legitimate and fact-based questions, the Georgian people received politically motivated attacks that contradicted the EU’s declared values.
“It is important that Brussels returns to the EU’s foundational values - respect for human rights and the rule of law. Rather than evading questions, every donor must act responsibly and respond transparently to legitimate concerns”, Papuashvili concluded.
