Georgian Parliament Speaker Shalva Papuashvili on Monday strongly criticised recent statements made by European Union ministers ahead of the EU Foreign Affairs Council meeting, accusing them of spreading disinformation about Georgia.
“I am deeply concerned by the disinformation narrative we have heard from several ministers prior to this meeting. There is a narrative being circulated regarding alleged democratic backsliding and Georgia being on the wrong path. This is sheer disinformation, and EU officials should be countering it - not promoting it”, the Speaker said.
Papuashvili also accused the EU of indirectly financing campaigns of hatred, violence, and propaganda in Georgia through EU-funded initiatives.
He claimed that neither the EU Ambassador to Georgia nor ambassadors from EU member states have ever condemned such activities, even when they originate from groups funded by EU institutions.
“There is a clear motivation behind their silence. By not condemning these actions, they are essentially encouraging hate and propaganda campaigns that are currently being funded by the EU budget. We have seen how the United States recognised this harmful pattern - through USAID and other funds - and ultimately decided to terminate such funding and expose the organisations involved. Now, it is only EU funds that continue to support these destructive efforts”, he concluded.
