Giorgi Kakhiani, the Vice Speaker of the Georgian Parliament, on Thursday said Georgia met all the standards required for NATO membership and awaited the Alliance’s political decision.
In his remarks, Kakhiani noted that the near future would show what decision NATO would make regarding this issue.
“Georgia currently meets all the necessary standards to become a NATO member, provided there is the corresponding political will”, he said.
“The rest is up to the decision of the NATO member states. Everything that needs to be done on our side is being fulfilled at the highest level, and we await the corresponding decision. What decision will be made and what messages will come from NATO will become clear in the near future”, the Vice Speaker concluded.
The Guardian recently published an analytical article “Why Europe should hijack Nato for its own purposes” by Paul Taylor, a senior fellow at the European Policy Centre, concerning the upcoming NATO summit.
In the article, Taylor writes that no one is explicitly mentioning NATO’s promise that Ukraine and Georgia will one day become member states.
