Georgian Parliament Speaker Shalva Papuashvili on Wednesday underscored the importance of fostering US-Georgia relations based on the mutual interests of both nations.
Reflecting on recent developments, Papuashvili expressed hope that the United States would soon appoint a new ambassador to Georgia.
“As for the United States, we see positive developments and have expectations, especially considering that what we have been saying over the past three or four years has now been confirmed by the Trump administration. So where could any misunderstanding lie between our countries?” the Speaker pointed out.
“We observe that there are certain groups seeking to drive a wedge between the Trump administration and Georgia, inventing various issues - first China, then Iran. Yet we heard Trump himself say today that a good deal was reached with China. That’s exactly what we’re talking about - our region demands that we maintain good relations with all nations”, Papuashvili continued.
However, Papuashvili also criticised recent actions by the US Embassy in Georgia, pointing out what he saw as a lapse in diplomatic messaging.
“What matters to us is that the US-Georgia relations are built upon the interests of both nations, as emphasised by the Secretary of State. Today’s administration acknowledges that other nations also have legitimate interests, and seeking alignment between those interests is the essence of diplomacy”, the Speaker concluded.
