Mamuka Mdinaradze, the Executive Secretary of the ruling Georgian Dream party, on Monday sharply criticised the silence of Georgian non-governmental organisations regarding Donald Trump's decision to ban masks at protest rallies.
In his remarks, Mdinaradze drew a parallel to the Georgian NGOs' strong condemnation of a similar ban in Georgia, calling their current silence a sign of “audacity”.
“We all know that silence is a sign of consent, but in this case, it's a sign of audacity because they were audacious at the time and criticized the simplest truth: that an unidentifiable offender is bad”, the ruling party official said.
He highlighted the perceived hypocrisy, noting that these same organisations vehemently opposed an analogous ban in Georgia. Mdinaradze further asserted that if someone had claimed 10 years ago that Georgia would precede the US in adopting certain laws and decisions, they would have been ridiculed. However, he believes this reality has now changed and anticipates that many more decisions made in Georgia will eventually be adopted in the US and Europe.
“If you cannot identify a lawbreaker, the state must ensure that their identification is made easier. This is the basis in Georgia, and now in the US, for banning the wearing of masks during protests; otherwise, no one forbids wearing a mask elsewhere or at other times”, he concluded.
