Levan Davitashvili, the First Vice Prime Minister and Minister of Economy and Sustainable Development of Georgia, on Tuesday said the main task of the Georgian Government was to eradicate poverty, foster economic well-being across the nation, and ultimately, achieve the reunification of the country.
Speaking at a Government meeting, Davitashvili noted that the country was on track to maintain higher-than-projected economic growth this year, a trend that has already led to a notable reduction in poverty in 2024.
“We believe that our economic forecasts will also be confirmed by the International Monetary Fund. As you know, we had close cooperation with their mission over the past week, and they likely assessed both the current status and the forecasts within the framework of this working mission. That is why it is very important for us when this is confirmed by highly competent international financial institutions and partners”, Davitashvili said.
He also added that it was worth noting that in April of this year, economic growth reached 7.5 percent while the average economic growth for January-April was defined at 8.8 percent.
“Specifically, for the first time in the country’s history since gaining independence, poverty in 2024 has dropped to a single-digit level. It is still very high, but we have quite ambitious plans for 2028 - to significantly reduce both unemployment and poverty. The so-called Gini index, which reflects the distribution of wealth and income within society, is also improving - the index is slightly decreasing. This shows that the inclusiveness of our economic growth is also increasing”, he concluded.
