Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze on Tuesday said his Government's ultimate goal was to eradicate poverty entirely, with an immediate target of reducing the poverty rate to below 4 percent by 2028.
In his remarks at a Government meeting, Kobakhidze referred to recent data published by the National Statistics Office of Georgia (Geostat), which shows a significant decline in the poverty rate.
“The poverty rate in 2023 was 11.8 percent, and this rate decreased by 2.4 percent in 2024, for the first time since the 1990s a single-digit poverty rate of 9.4 percent was recorded in our country. I would like to remind you that in 2012, when the Georgian Dream [party] came into power, more than one million one hundred thousand people lived below the poverty line in our country. That number has now dropped to under 350 000”, the PM said.
“Progress is obvious, however, our ultimate goal is to eradicate poverty in our country, we are moving at a rapid pace in this direction, and here too we have a specific programmatic goal to reduce this rate to four percent by 2028. This is also absolutely realistic, therefore, at this rate, in the medium term, we can actually completely eradicate poverty in our country. This is one of the most important national tasks for our country”, he concluded.
