Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze on Tuesday emphasised the importance of maintaining close ties with the Georgian diaspora during his address at a forum dedicated to Diaspora Day.
In his address, Kobakhidze highlighted that in 2017, caring for the diaspora was declared a constitutional duty of the state - an exceptional move in constitutional practice, and one that sets Georgia apart.
“I am pleased to have the opportunity to address you at this very important event - a day dedicated to the hundreds of thousands of Georgians who, today, live and work outside the borders of our country. Maintaining a close connection with representatives of the Georgian diaspora and our compatriots living abroad is a special duty of the Georgian Government and of each one of us”, the PM said.
“The Georgian Government is implementing numerous projects aimed at fulfilling this constitutional obligation. However, we are fully aware that there is still much more to be done in order to care for our compatriots living abroad and to ensure the preservation of their strong ties with their homeland”, he concluded.
