David Matikashvili, an MP from the ruling Georgian Dream party and Chair of the Georgian Parliament’s Committee on Procedural Issues and Rules, on Thursday commented on a recent statement by US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, saying it reflects an undecided position regarding the region and Georgia in particular.
In his remarks, Matikashvili noted that domestic “radicals” were mistakenly celebrating Rubio's statement, especially given the history of Georgian-American relations. He described Rubio's answer to a “provocative and lie-filled question” from Congressman Joe Wilson, whom he characterised as “full of anti-Georgian sentiment”.
“Neither the Georgian Dream nor Georgia was mentioned. The conversation was about America investigating specific circumstances and evidence, relying on local bureaus, and making a final decision based on that. The most important thing here is to find the context in which all this was said, what Marco Rubio was talking about”, the Parliament official said.
Matikashvili highlighted that Rubio began his response by saying “As I have already told you” and “As I have said before”, suggesting a consistent policy stance. He added that it was “natural” for any US administration to react to anti-American governments.
Matikashvili argued that Rubio’s remarks ultimately signal that the current US administration has not yet formed a definitive stance on either Georgia or the broader region.
