The current situation in Georgia and the preparations for the upcoming local elections were discussed on Monday in a meeting between the Georgian Parliament Speaker Shalva Papuashvili and Theodoros Rousopoulos, the President of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe.
The meeting also discussed the current absence of Georgia’s representation in the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe through the Delegation.
Papuashvili focused on the resolution adopted by the PACE in January, urging the Parliament Members to withdraw from the Delegation.
The Speaker further underlined that Georgia remained loyal to the key principles and values of the Council of Europe.
As he pointed out, respecting the people’s choice was a fundamental pillar of democracy, and its disregard was unacceptable.
The parties expressed their commitment to continuing the constructive dialogue.
The meeting was held in Budapest within the framework of the Conference of Speakers of the European Union Parliaments.
