Georgian President Mikheil Kavelashvili on Friday, together with Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze, Parliament Speaker Shalva Papuashvili, and Tbilisi Mayor Kakha Kaladze, visited Kikvidze Park - also known as the Veterans’ Culture and Recreation Park - to congratulate World War II veterans on Victory Day over Fascism.
At the site, President Kavelashvili laid flowers at the monument to Meliton Kantaria and paid tribute to the memory of those who died in the war.
“May 9 is the day when the humanity wrote a new chapter in history by defeating fascism. Georgians played a significant role in achieving that victory”, the President noted.
“I express my deep respect to our heroic veterans and bow in memory of the fellow citizens who gave their lives for freedom and peace”, he said.
This year marks the 80th anniversary of the Allied victory over fascism in World War II.
On May 8, 1945, Nazi Germany officially capitulated, bringing the war in Europe to an end. The following day, May 9, was declared Victory Day over Fascism.
