Georgian Parliament Speaker Shalva Papuashvili on Wednesday said that the only objective of the MEGOBARI Act adopted by the US House of Representative was to generate “informational noise”.
In his interview with Rustavi 2, Papuashvili stressed that the Act would have no impact on the US-Georgia relations.
“This document doesn’t even have real substance, because the US President doesn’t need anyone’s approval to impose sanctions if he decides to. Moreover, this Act cannot obligate the President to impose any sanctions. Period. It’s nothing more than a mix of political opinions from different members of Congress”, the Speaker said.
He further emphasised that the US President not only had the authority to impose sanctions but could also initiate military action and conduct warfare for up to three months without congressional approval.
“We see how tariffs and sanctions are introduced. The only purpose of this document is to create media noise. It’s part of the same pattern as resolutions from the European Parliament, and statements from the Czech Republic, Lithuania, Estonia, and others”, Papuashvili continued.
“Will this hinder US-Georgia relations? It will not, because US foreign policy is determined by the President and the administration. It is with the administration that we have our relationship”, he concluded.
