Georgian Justice Minister Paata Salia on Tuesday criticised the United States House of Representatives’ support for the MEGOBARI act, calling it unfriendly towards the Georgian state and people.
In his remarks, Salia noted that the MEGOBARI Act was misaligned with Georgia’s national interests and appeared to support radical groups aiming to destabilise the country.
“In its essence, this [MEGOBARI] Act is certainly not friendly towards the Georgian state or the Georgian people. This Act may only be friendly towards radical forces that are trying to change the Government in Georgia through violent means”, Salia said.
The Minister further expressed concern that the bill could damage United States-Georgia relations and benefit informal groups with political agendas.
“The so-called MEGOBARI Act is everything but true friendship” - this is how the ruling Georgian Dream party is assessing the document adopted by the United States House of Representatives.
Members of the ruling party state that the document, dubbed the MEGOBARI Act, contradicts both Georgia’s national interests and the vision of the new United States administration. According to them, the final adoption of this bill serves the interests of informal groups whose goal is to harm Georgian-American relations. As for the opposition, they openly state that they fought hard to achieve this outcome”, he said.
