Levan Makhashvili, the Chair of the Committee on European Integration of the Georgian Parliament, on Tuesday said the MEGOBARI Act was anything but friendship, which contradicted both the interests of Georgian citizens as well as the vision of the new United States administration.
In his remarks, Makhashvili noted that if the MEGOBARI Act entered into force, it would significantly damage bilateral relations, which in his opinion was also the aim of informal forces.
He further expressed hope that the United States President Donald Trump would not sign the act and fulfill his promise to defeat the deep state.
“The so-called MEGOBARI Act is anything but friendship. We have repeatedly mentioned that it contradicts both the interests of Georgian citizens and the vision of the new US administration regarding Georgia and the South Caucasus region. Theoretically, if it enters into force, of course, it will significantly damage bilateral relations, and this is precisely the aim of those informal forces and influences, by inertia, nevertheless made it through the lower house”, Makhashvili said.
“Ultimately, there are several stages left before it theoretically enters into force, but we hope that the President [Trump] will not sign this provocative resolution and will thus be able to fulfill his promise to defeat the deep state in the US. The sentiments that the new US administration has based on the formal and informal communication that we have had with them give us hope for this”, he concluded.
