Thea Tsulukiani, the Vice Speaker of the Georgian Parliament and Chair of the Parliament’s Temporary Investigative Commission examining crimes committed by the former United National Movement Government between 2003 and 2012, on Friday said Georgia was gradually moving toward achieving genuine sovereignty and independence - an outcome she attributed to the current policies of the ruling Georgian Dream party.
In her remarks, Tsulukiani criticised the diplomatic corps, claiming that since 2012, with a few exceptions, foreign ambassadors had not respected Georgia’s sovereignty and had supported the former President Mikheil Saakashvili, who she said was the “main architect of the regime”.
“Step by step, we are moving toward a point where, thanks to the policies currently being implemented by the Georgian Dream party, our country’s sovereignty and independence, so we hope, will gain real substance. The young people who will eventually take over governance will inherit a state where the opinion of a foreign ambassador sent here will no longer be of any relevance when it comes to the country’s internal affairs”, the Parliament Vice Speaker said.
“We must gradually move in this direction because, unfortunately, from 2012 until now, with one or two fortunate exceptions, not a single ambassador has respected our sovereignty or the blood Georgians have shed in the fight for freedom. Instead, they supported Mikheil Saakashvili, the true architect and executioner of that regime, who is now in prision”, she concluded.
