Kakha Kaladze, the Mayor of Tbilisi and Secretary General of the ruling Georgian Dream party, on Thursday said Georgia had been the target of externally orchestrated revolutionary processes and attempts to stage a coup d'état to install preferred individuals in power.
In his remarks, Kaladze claimed that the recent political developments in the country were not driven by domestic opposition forces but were externally coordinated.
“Everything that has been happening in Georgia in recent months and years is not the result of the so-called Georgian opposition’s vision or strategy. They have no original ideas or plans. It is all orchestrated from abroad, dictated by foreign actors. There were attempts to stage a revolution. The aim was to stage a coup and bring to power individuals - agents - who would blindly follow any instruction given to them. This is a simple reality”, the ruling party official said.
Kaladze stressed the need for national unity, urging the Georgian public to remain vigilant.
“We, together with the Georgian people, must stand strong and do everything possible to prevent these external forces from creating instability in our country”, he continued.
In remarks over the video released by Russian pranksters, in which Paul Massaro, the Senior Policy Advisor at the Helsinki Commission, said a “Maidan”-style revolution was still possible in Georgia, Kaladze noted that the Georgian Government had been talking about this topic for a long time.
“We’ve been talking about this for a long time. Many may have been skeptical at first, but everything became clear after the US President himself addressed this issue and a series of documents were released. These documents clearly show that organisations like USAID and NED were directly involved in the overthrow of governments and coups in various countries. They spent money on this. In Georgia as well, the events that occurred were not accidental - they were organised”, Kaladze said.
