Maia Bitadze, the Chair of the Georgian Parliament’s Environment Protection and Natural Resources Committee, on Friday said Georgia was playing a vital role in connecting the energy markets of Europe and Asia, notably through the Black Sea Submarine Cable project, which aims to link Georgia's and Europe’s electricity systems and strengthen Europe’s energy security.
In her address at the Parliamentary Plenary Session of the Energy Community in the European Parliament, Bitadze underscored the strategic importance of Georgia's energy sector's transition towards renewable energy as part of its integration path with the European Union.
“Georgia, as a country with strong potential for renewable energy generation, is consistently aligning its national energy policy with European Union legislation and standards. Among other things, the National Integrated Energy and Climate Plan adopted by the Parliament in 2024 set goals for 2030 - reducing greenhouse gas emissions, increasing renewable energy, and interconnecting energy systems”, Bitadze said.
She further noted that Georgia's ambition to tackle climate change was growing.
“In 2025, it is planned to update nationally determined contributions and set a target of reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 47 percent by 2030. In addition, Georgia is implementing a monitoring, reporting and verification system, which will ensure transparent accounting of emissions in relevant sectors and will facilitate emissions trading with the European Union”, she continued.
Bitadze emphasised that the Georgian Parliament's Committee on Environmental Protection and Natural Resources was actively working on the Climate Change law, which would set the goal of achieving climate neutrality by 2050.
Georgia has been a full member of the Energy Community since July 1, 2017 and is implementing relevant reforms in active cooperation with the Union Secretariat. Notably, Georgia is the chair of the Energy Community this year.
