Levan Davitashvili, the First Vice Prime Minister and Minister of Economy and Sustainable Development of Georgia, on Thursday addressed the US sanctions imposed by the previous administration on certain high-ranking Georgian officials.
In his remarks, Davitashvili emphasised that the sanctions, which he described as unfounded, had become a hindrance in bilateral relations and must be reconsidered.
“We held discussions at the US Treasury Department regarding sanctions enforcement. Overall, Georgia is a model country and a reliable partner when it comes to implementing US sanctions. However, the sanctions imposed without any valid basis against some members of the Georgian government are undoubtedly an obstacle in our relationship, and this needs to change”, the First Vice PM said.
He noted that while progress may take time, the initiation of dialogue was a significant step forward.
“This will take time, but it is important that we are starting a dialogue, and this requires appropriate procedures even if there is political will, which, of course, we have seen exists. All of this gives us hope that we will further deepen and strengthen our relations with the United States”, he concluded.
