Levan Davitashvili, the First Vice Prime Minister and Minister of Economy and Sustainable Development of Georgia, on Tuesday highlighted significant progress in the construction of the Anaklia deep sea port.
In his remarks, Davitashvili noted that a port was far more than just a docking facility where ships unload cargo, emphasising that the port would catalyse a wide range of economic activities that would be gradually developed in Anaklia.
“I believe the only correct decision was for the state to take initiative and not wait for investors in developing critical infrastructure. We are consistently moving forward with the development of the port. Once this infrastructure is in place, we will have much more favourable conditions to engage with partners. A partner could be anyone - professionals or companies ready to co-develop the complex ecosystem surrounding the Anaklia port with us”, the Minister said.
He also noted that although the initial target for receiving the first ships was set for 2028, the port may be able to begin operations by the end of 2027.
“The Anaklia port is progressing rapidly. We are working to eliminate the current infrastructure gap as quickly as possible. Once we have competitive, high-quality modern infrastructure, Georgia will become significantly more competitive compared to alternative routes. In the long term, we aim to secure stable cargo flows through our corridor”, he concluded.
