Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze on Friday reaffirmed the legitimacy of the ruling Georgian Dream party’s electoral victory, emphasising that the will of the Georgian people must be respected, including by foreign actors.
Kobakhidze made his remarks in response to a question about the resolution adopted by the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe, which he dismissed as “of little interest.”
“We had previously decided to suspend our participation in PACE due to the absolutely incorrect approach taken in adopting a prior resolution. Everyone must respect the will of the Georgian people. The people of Georgia chose the Georgian Dream in the October parliamentary elections. This happened despite foreign interference in our electoral process”, the PM said.
He further criticised certain foreign diplomats and officials for interfering in the elections.
“For instance, just days before the vote, the EU Ambassador made direct statements against the Georgian Dream, which amounted to blatant interference. Likewise, other European and American officials were actively involved in influencing our electoral process”, he continued
Despite this, the head of the Government underscored that the outcome reflected the firm will of the Georgian people.
“We defeated them all - not us, but the Georgian public. The people triumphed over those forces trying to undermine our independence, freedom, and national interests. Therefore, everyone must come to terms with the fact that, despite external efforts, common sense prevailed in Georgia. The firm will of the people won, and our country continues to develop in the right direction. Respect must be given to the choice of the Georgian people”, he concluded.
