Georgian Parliament Speaker Shalva Papuashvili on Wednesday said unspecified foreign forces were once again seeking to destabilise the foundations of the Georgian state, emphasising that the Government would not be drawn into provocation and that no external agenda would succeed in the country.
In his social media message, Papuashvili asserted that the Georgian people would not succumb to these provocations and that the scenario of these external actors would not be realized, stressing that the only will that would be carried out in Georgia was that of the Georgian people.
“Now that the [Georgian] state has been established, a foreign force has once again decided to shake its foundation. We will not respond to this provocation - they will not see their scenario play out. The only thing that will be realised in this country is the will of the Georgian people”, the Speaker said.
He underlined that the Georgian people had elected a Government that would defend the state to the very end.
“And now, when the state is functioning and the country is fully defending its sovereignty and independence, a foreign force has once again decided to undermine its foundation. They have reignited hate propaganda. Their goal is to divide and conquer us, to subjugate and manipulate us, to replace our national interests with their political agenda”, Papuashvili noted.
He further drew a parallel between the events of 1989, when Soviet soldiers attempted to suppress the idea of independence, and the current situation, claiming that those who had lost their homeland and were waving foreign flags were now trying with the same ruthlessness to undermine Georgia's independence.
“In 1989, Rodionov’s soldiers tried to crush the idea of independence, but they failed. Today, on Rustaveli Avenue, the soldiers with shovels have been replaced by flag-waving individuals who have lost their homeland and who, with the same ruthlessness, are attempting to destroy the idea of Georgian independence”, the Speaker continued.
“But this time, it won’t work. The Georgian people have learned their lesson. They have chosen a Government that will defend our state to the end. We will not fall for this provocation - they will not see their scenario fulfilled. The only thing that will take place in this country is the will of the Georgian people. That will is for equality, justice, independence, and national identity. We will prevail. Georgia will prevail. The idea of April 9 and the blood that was shed will prevail”, he concluded.
