Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze on Saturday made a bold statement ahead of the local elections scheduled for October, predicting a sweeping victory for the ruling Georgian Dream party in all 64 municipalities.
In his remarks, Kobakhidze downplayed the prospects of the opposition, suggesting their participation in the elections would only serve to further highlight their political weakness.
“For us, the opposition's participation in the local elections could even be somewhat interesting, given that they will suffer an even heavier defeat than in the previous parliamentary elections”, the PM said.
Kobakhidze cited recent public opinion polls, claiming that the support for the ruling Georgian Dream party had further grown since the elections last October.
“We are ambitious enough to believe that we can achieve an even better outcome than we did in the parliamentary elections. Current polls point to that. According to today's surveys, our approval rating has further improved”, he noted.
Confident in the ruling Georgian Dream party’s organisational strength and public support, Kobakhidze predicted a total victory in the upcoming municipal elections.
“Either way, they are doomed to a heavy loss in all 64 municipalities. We will definitely win both the mayoral and city council races in all 64 municipalities nationwide”, the PM concluded.
