Levan Machavariani, an MP from the ruling Georgian Dream party and Deputy Chair of the parliamentary faction of the ruling party, on Wednesday criticised the United Kingdom’s decision to sanction Georgian judges, claiming it reflected the influence of the global war party and the deep state in Britain.
In his remarks over the matter, Machavariani asserted that these actions lacked factual basis and served broader geopolitical interests rather than justice.
“We have spoken multiple times about the United Kingdom and their approach when they threaten us with certain sanctions. In this case, they are sanctioning judges while admitting they have no evidence or facts, only some suspicions”, the official noted.
He suggested that the deep state and the global war party exerted significant influence over the United Kingdom policy decisions.
“This clearly and directly indicates the influence of the global war party and the deep state, specifically in Britain, and this is not just our opinion. If we recall, just a month ago, Liz Truss, who was the Prime Minister, gave two interviews where she emphasised that the deep state is even more deeply rooted in the United Kingdom than in the United States”, Machavariani said.
Despite the lack of specific evidence, the United Kingdom Government on Wednesday imposed sanctions on Levan Murusidze, a member of Georgia’s High Council of Justice and a judge at the Tbilisi Court of Appeals, ands Mikheil Chinchaladze, the Chair of the Tbilisi Court of Appeals. The official statement cites “reasonable grounds to suspect” their involvement in serious corruption.
