Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze on Monday highlighted a highly significant date for the country - the anniversary of the 1991 referendum on the restoration of state independence.
In his remarks over the matter, Kobakhidze noted that the date also marked the 86th birthday of Georgia's first President Zviad Gamsakhurdia, whom he credited as the key figure behind the referendum and the declaration of independence.
“March 31 is one of the most significant dates in Georgia’s history. On this day in 1991, a nationwide referendum was held on the restoration of state independence. Just days later, on April 9, Georgia officially declared its independence. Over 90 percent of eligible voters participated in the referendum, with over 99 percent supporting independence - demonstrating the Georgian people’s unanimous commitment to this historic cause”, the PM said.
The Prime Minister further highlighted that since 1991, Georgia had endured four wars, two revolutions, and severe economic crises, yet the country had not only preserved its independence but had further strengthened it.
“These years have been extremely challenging for our nation. Since 1991, we have experienced four wars, two revolutions, and periods of grave economic hardship. Despite these difficulties, Georgia has managed not only to maintain but also to solidify its independence. Safeguarding our sovereignty remains our utmost priority. Today, we can confidently say that Georgia is more independent and sovereign than ever before. This achievement must be protected at all costs”, Kobakhidze noted.
“On this day, we must especially remember those who have sacrificed their lives for Georgia’s independence over the years. We must pay tribute to our soldiers who fell in the wars fought for our nation’s sovereignty. I extend my congratulations to every citizen on this occasion and wish for the continued strengthening of Georgia’s independence and the reunification of our country”, the PM concluded.
