Archil Gorduladze, the Chair of the Parliament's Legal Affairs Committee, on Friday criticised the US Senate Foreign Relations Committee's endorsement of the MEGOBARI Act, calling it a “hostile initiative” orchestrated by the deep state.
In his remarks, Gorduladze noted that the MEGOBARI Act - a bipartisan bill that envisages sanctions against the Georgian Dream Government officials - represented external interference in domestic affairs, saying that the Trump administration’s efforts to combat the deep state had yet to yield effective results.
“We have always said that defeating the deep state will only be evident through Georgia’s example. If external interference in Georgia continues, no one will be able to claim that the deep state has been defeated”, the Parliament official said.
“We have seen exactly the same scenario unfold, where the deep state managed to push this Act through the Senate, under a specific name, which can only be described as hostile towards Georgia”, he noted.
He further suggested that the timing of this decision, ahead of the planned demonstration on March 31, is intended to encourage participation in the protests.
