Irakli Kadagishvili, the Chair of the Regional Policy and Self-Government Committee of the Georgian Parliament, on Friday dismissed the US Senate Foreign Relations Committee's endorsement of the MEGOBARI Act, calling it an “anti-Georgian initiative”.
In his remarks over the MEGOBARI Act, a bipartisan bill that envisages sanctions against the Georgian Dream Government officials, Kadagishvili noted that the current moment presented the best opportunity to reboot relations between the United States and Georgia and to establish a clear framework for strategic cooperation.
Since the start of the war in Ukraine, there has been pressure on Georgia to take aggressive action against Russia. The political pressure on Georgia and its government has been extremely intense. It was in this context that the MEGOBARI Act and various resolutions with absurd provisions were drafted”, the Parliament official said.
“Now, there is a different President in the United States with a different approach. Therefore, this Act will remain merely an initiative representing the interests of narrow political groups and will not hinder the restoration of Georgian-American relations”, Kadagishvili concluded.
