Kakha Kaladze, the Mayor of Tbilisi and Secretary General of the ruling Georgian Dream party, on Monday asserted that the opposition's characterisation of the proposed legislation, inspired by the US Foreign Agents Registration Act (FARA), as a Russian law was not their own message but a directive from external forces.
In his remarks over the matter, Kaladze noted that the opposition’s efforts would be futile.
“They will not succeed because we have clearly stated that we are copying a law that has been in effect in the United States for years. Transparency is fundamentally important”, the ruling party official said.
“The funding of various organisations has been happening in a completely opaque manner. Attempts to overthrow the Government were financed from abroad, polarisation was funded and continues to be funded externally, and even societal divisions were financed from outside. We must put an end to this. The public has the right to know everything, and everything must be fully transparent”, he concluded.
