Kakha Kaladze, the Mayor of Tbilisi and Secretary General of the ruling Georgian Dream party, on Thursday said ambassadors of foreign countries did not have the right to interfere in the country's internal political matters, stressing that the sole authority over the country belonged to the Georgian people.
“This is an unfortunate reality. For example, let’s recall just a few months ago, during the parliamentary elections, the kinds of statements that were made by the European Union and some other countries’ ambassadors. It is simply unimaginable for someone to interfere in an election campaign and internal political affairs with their statements. They seem to think they are the rulers of this country, but that is impossible. The only true authority here belongs to the Georgian people. This is not about criticism - anyone can criticise - but no one has the right to interfere in the internal affairs of the country”, the ruling party official said.
Kaladze emphasised that the Georgian Government was prioritising the interests of its citizens while safeguarding the nation’s independence and sovereignty.
“When elections were held in Germany, Elon Musk made a statement about it. Immediately, there was a reaction from Europe, saying that such interference in elections was unacceptable. As soon as it concerned their own country, they condemned it. In Romania, elections were completely canceled - did anyone speak out and criticise it? They seem to think that Georgia is a secondary country. On the contrary, today, Georgia has a patriotic government. Our priority is the interests of our country. We will defend and strengthen our nation's independence and sovereignty. No one will be allowed to take the kind of stance we have seen in some of these statements”, he concluded.
