Levan Machavariani, an MP from the ruling Georgian Dream party and Deputy Chair of the parliamentary faction of the ruling party, on Saturday criticised the Council of Europe’s Committee of Ministers for its stance on Georgia’s newly adopted law on family values and protection of minors, stating that Georgia would not adhere to what he called “absurd” gender ideology.
In his remarks, Machavariani reaffirmed that Georgia was recognising only two genders - male and female - rejecting what he described as “Eurocrats' illusion of thousands of genders”.
“It is unfortunate that Eurocrats still live under the illusion that there are thousands of genders. Thank God, we don’t have to prove this to the United States. There are only two genders: male and female”, the Parliament official said.
Machavariani dismissed criticism from European institutions, arguing that Georgia remained committed to protecting traditional family values and shielding children from “harmful propaganda”.
“Of course, everyone’s rights are protected, and if someone thinks differently, let’s put it this way, they can do whatever they want in their own homes. However, if someone wants to propagate all this, especially the kind of absurd propaganda we see in many countries, which specifically targets children, that is a red line”, he continued.
Machavariani further noted that the law on family values and protection of minors was passed with overwhelming public support, transcending party lines.
“When we adopted this law, we had full support from the public. It doesn’t matter if they are our voters or supporters of the radical opposition, the absolute majority of Georgian citizens believed that this law was necessary. Naturally, we followed their demand. No matter how much Eurocrats continue to claim that this law somehow contradicts democratic standards or values, this is absurd. And we will not engage in this theatre of absurdity”, Machavariani noted.
Referring to certain European Union member states, Machavariani further stated that “in many EU countries, a woman can walk into a civil registry office and, within an hour, become a man. We will not engage in such madness or be part of this deception”.
