Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze on Wednesday emphasised the need for stricter legislation against attacks on police officers, asserting that when it comes to assaults against officers, there is no alternative to tightening legal measures.
In his remarks, Kobakhidze argued that certain forces in Georgia had sought to challenge state institutions by attacking law enforcement officers and supporting those who engage in such actions.
“You have seen that certain forces in Georgia, ill-wishers have sought to weaken the strength of the state by attacking law enforcement agencies. Even today, they openly support individuals who have distinguished themselves by attacking police officers. Why? Because everyone knows that if you attack law enforcement agencies and get away with it, you can shake the foundation of the state. We must not allow this”, the PM said.
Kobakhidze asserted that there was no alternative to enacting strict legal measures to ensure the protection of law enforcement officials, emphasising that maintaining the strength of these institutions was crucial for the overall stability of the nation.
“Our country has different types of sanctions, but in general, there is no alternative to strict measures in this field. If someone manages to destabilise law enforcement bodies, they will easily be able to destabilise the entire state. We will not allow this. Therefore, the direction we are taking is the right one. We just need to implement different types of sanctions to counter any attempts to undermine the strength of the state”, he concluded.
