Levan Machavariani, an MP from the ruling Georgian Dream party and Deputy Chair of the parliamentary faction of the ruling party, on Tuesday said the Georgian Dream party would “always” be a “guarantor of peace and stability” in the country.
In his remarks, Machavariani noted that the Georgian Government had done everything possible to support Ukraine on international platforms, joining 600 resolutions in support of Ukraine, providing refuge and social assistance to tens of thousands of Ukrainians, and remaining among the world’s leaders in humanitarian aid.
The official further claimed that before Donald Trump became President of the United States, no one cared about ending the war in Ukraine through negotiations or diplomacy.
He claimed that when Trump initiated steps toward peace, a coordinated attack was launched against him, involving Brussels bureaucrats and the Georgian opposition, whom he accused of serving the deep state.
“Our society is now well aware of what was discussed behind closed doors, who was on the other side, and what instructions we were given. When attempts to drag us into the war failed, we were presented with three alternative demands. The first was to impose sanctions on Russia, which would have devastated our economy. The second was to send chartered flights full of volunteers to fight in Ukraine, which would have meant direct escalation with Russia. Notably, no other country was asked to do this. The third demand was to transfer our military equipment to Ukraine. When we firmly refused these demands, the next step was an attempt to replace the Georgian Dream party through revolutionary means and install foreign agents in power”, he concluded.
He further claimed that to increase political tensions in Georgia, various forms of pressure were applied, including alleged blackmail against Bidzina Ivanishvili, the founder of the ruling party, the recall of Ukraine’s Ambassador, and a diplomatic protest by the ambassadors of 27 EU member states.
