Giorgi Kakhiani, the Vice Speaker of the Georgian Parliament, on Wednesday claimed that the United National Movement (UNM) had not changed and was waiting for an opportunity to return to power, warning that it would repeat its past actions if it did so.
Speaking before a Constitutional Court hearing, Kakhiani said the party had shown no remorse for the actions it was accused of committing while in government and had instead praised its time in office.
“We have been listening to the United National Movement’s explanations over the past few days, and one conclusion can be drawn: this political force has not changed at all. It is the same force it was when in government. Its members are simply waiting for the right moment to return to power and continue acting as they did before. We have seen no remorse for the past actions we accuse them of committing. On the contrary, they speak about how good the period of UNM rule was. They show no regret for their actions”, he noted.
“Therefore, their return to power would pose a serious threat to human rights and the constitutional order. This is precisely the basis of our constitutional lawsuit: this political force poses a threat to the country. When in power, it created numerous challenges for the government and the country as a whole, and if it returns to power, it will repeat the same actions”, Kakhiani concluded.
