Levan Makhashvili, the Chair of the Georgian Parliament’s Committee on European Integration, on Tuesday commented on the ongoing proceedings before the Constitutional Court, urging all parties to refrain from interfering in Georgia’s judicial system.
In an interview with Imedi TV, Makhashvili said foreign actors should direct any questions regarding the lawsuit and the court’s ruling to Georgia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs or members of parliament.
He also said he expected foreign actors to issue statements at the request of the opposition.
“We have repeatedly seen that when they have nothing to say in response, particularly when they have nothing to say before the Constitutional Court, they resort to statements from foreign actors to cover up their own incompetence. Of course, we can expect them to ask their patrons to issue statements, but one thing is clear: the Constitutional Court must make its decision in accordance with the Constitution of Georgia, not under the dictates of foreign policy considerations”, Makhashvili concluded.
