Georgia has joined as a co-sponsor of the United States-led United Nations resolution titled Path to Peace, which aims to bring an end to the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war.
The United States introduced the resolution last Friday, and discussions are currently underway among UN member states regarding its support.
European nations are also deliberating on whether to back the resolution proposed by the United States.
The Wall Street Journal on Saturday reported that an alternative resolution, initiated by Ukraine, was also on the table, which the United States would not support, noting that Washington pressed Kyiv to withdraw its UN resolution marking the third anniversary of the war.
The outlet further added that its journalists had reviewed a letter sent by the US to various capitals, in which American diplomats informed their European counterparts that Washington would oppose Ukraine’s resolution and urged them to persuade Kyiv to withdraw its text.
In its report, the outlet highlighted that two European diplomats said that until recent days, the US had been working with Europe on Ukraine’s resolution, proposing minor amendments.
Diplomats noted that the United States had asked Ukrainian representatives to withdraw their resolution on Friday, a request that Kyiv refused. Meanwhile, British and French officials had urged Washington to revise its draft resolution, but according to diplomatic sources, the US rejected the request.
