Levan Machavariani, an MP from the ruling Georgian Dream party and Deputy Chair of the parliamentary faction of the ruling party, on Saturday said the Georgian Government remained committed to a “cautious and pragmatic” foreign policy amid the ongoing global geopolitical shifts.
In his remarks, Machavariani noted that the new US administration was fully aware of the steps taken by the Georgian Government.
Machavariani also commented on the Georgian opposition's stance toward the US President Donald Trump, claiming that no opposition leader had refrained from criticising Trump and labeling him as a “Russian agent”.
“I would like to remind our citizens that there is virtually no opposition leader left who has not harshly criticised Mr. Trump or called him a Russian agent. The American administration is well informed about this and also understands the policies implemented by the Georgian Dream”, the ruling party official said.
He further emphasised the Georgian Government's long-standing efforts against the deep state.
“As paradoxical as it may sound, the fight against the deep state, which Trump is now engaged in, was initiated by the Georgian Dream. Our public is well aware of the challenges we have faced to maintain stability and peace in our country”, he continued.
Machavariani also pointed to Hungary as a key ally for Trump, referring to Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán as a close friend of Georgia.
“Trump's primary ally in Europe is Hungary, and we all know how strong our friendship with Prime Minister Orbán is. Therefore, rest assured that the U.S. administration is completely informed about the situation in Georgia”, he concluded.
