Levan Machavariani, an MP from the ruling Georgian Dream party and Deputy Chair of the parliamentary faction of the ruling party, on Saturday highlighted the alignment between the new United States administration and the ruling Georgian Dream party, not only in values but also in politics and messaging.
In his remarks, Machavariani noted the speech of United States Vice-President J.D. Vance at the Munich Security Conference had exposed Europe’s democratic backsliding and restrictions on freedom of speech.
“Yesterday, we saw J.D. Vance’s speech at the Munich Conference, where he essentially lectured the European Union on democracy. With facts and evidence, he directly exposed the type of democratic regression occurring in the EU and how freedom of speech is being restricted. Vance highlighted the elections in Romania, which were annulled, and directly accused the bureaucracy of artificially orchestrating this process”, the ruling party official said.
“Interestingly, he also criticised a former EU commissioner who publicly stated that it was not a problem for them to annul elections elsewhere if they disliked the results. Notably, this statement did not receive any critical response from EU officials, and in this case, silence signifies agreement. Regarding all these issues, J.D. Vance strongly criticised Europe”, he continued.
Machavariani expressed satisfaction that the Trump administration’s approach aligned with the ruling Georgian Dream party’s stance on sovereignty and democracy.
“The Georgian Dream has been speaking with great caution for years because we do not have the luxury of speaking as openly as the United States can. However, it is very satisfying to see that there is absolute alignment not only in values but also in politics, messaging, and actions between the Georgian Dream and the current United States administration”, he continued.
He further noted that the policies implemented by the ruling Georgian Dream party since the start of the Russia-Ukraine war were the only viable course for the country and, despite facing international pressure, the Georgian Government remained committed to its national interests and would continue on this path.
