Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze on Thursday emphasised the importance of recalling the crimes committed by the United National Movement regime between 2004 and 2012, noting that the findings of the investigation would be crucial for the proper development of the country’s political and democratic system.
Kobakhidze’s comments followed the establishment of the temporary investigative commission in the Georgian Parliament to investigate activities of the former United National Movement regime and its officials between 2003 and 2012.
In his remarks, Kobakhidze highlighted numerous crimes committed during that period, and further noted that a parliamentary investigative commission would examine these cases.
“The parliamentary investigation is equally, if not more, important. This process will be conducted publicly and we must once again recall all the crimes committed by the former regime between 2004 to 2012. These were grave crimes, including numerous murders, torture, systematic offences in prisons, and large-scale business racketeering that affected tens of thousands of people in our country”, the PM said.
“There was also the crime of the 2008 war [with Russia]. A vast number of crimes were committed by the previous regime, and it is crucial to remind society of these events. The parliamentary investigative commission will work on these issues, and I believe the results of this investigation will be vital in ensuring the proper development of our political and democratic system”, Kobakhidze concluded.
