European Parliament member Ondřej Dostál on Tuesday criticised the European Parliament’s recent resolutions on Georgia, calling them “disinformation” intended to interfere in the country’s sovereignty.
In his interview with Imedi TV, Dostál emphasised that many MEPs had opposed the positions expressed in these resolutions.
“Officially, the European Parliament acknowledged that the elections held in Georgia were generally legitimate. However, afterwards, it decided that it did not like the election outcome and adopted a resolution condemning democratic backsliding. It is worth noting that European Parliament resolutions are not legally binding. If MEPs agree that the sky is green instead of blue, they would adopt such a resolution as well. Unfortunately, these resolutions serve as disinformation intended to interfere in Georgia’s sovereignty, and this is condemnable. Many of us, including Czech and Slovak MEPs, oppose the stance reflected in these resolutions”, the MEP said.
Dostál further noted that the European Parliament did not have constitutional authority to interfere in Georgia’s elections, yet several resolutions appear to serve precisely this purpose.
“This is a clear sign of disrespect toward the sovereignty of another country”, he concluded.
