Nikoloz Samkharadze, Chair of the Foreign Relations Committee of the Georgian Parliament, on Wednesday described a recent statement by European Commissioner for Enlargement Marta Kos as significant and controversial, arguing that it effectively criticises the current US administration and discourages close ties with it.
His remarks followed Kos’s statement that countries aspiring to join the European Union should distance themselves from Donald Trump’s Make America Great Again (MAGA) movement in order to advance their EU membership prospects.
“Donald Trump won the presidency precisely on the basis of this philosophy and under this slogan”, Samkharadze said.
“Simply put, this statement means that anyone who maintains friendly relations with the current US administration has no place in the European Union. Marta Kos’s remarks are scandalous because, for candidate countries, they effectively amount to a ban on maintaining close relations with the new US administration”, he concluded.
